Carmen (Bourassa) Gonzalez was born and raised by her French Canadian parents in Edmonton, Alberta which is where she still lives today. Her Chilean born husband and Carmen have three grown children.
Carmen began drawing as a teenager from watching her mother paint and draw. After completing high school, she unfortunately took a career path away from the art industry. In 1998, Carmen was in a car accident. After struggling with her injuries for eight years, she entered into a five week long rehabilitation program in 2006. Carmen’s intense rehab required her to set two long-term goals. One of them was to become an artist. Her life changing rehab experience was the catalyst for Carmen to pursue her dream.
Upon returning home, she immediately began creating art; then she enrolled in art school while being a full time mother. In April 2013, she graduated from the Faculty of Extension, University of Alberta’s Visual Fine Arts program. Carmen’s work was featured in a TREX Exhibit by the Art Gallery of Alberta from 2019 to 2021. Her artwork is joyful with the use of bold colours and patterns.
